LL-37 is the only known human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide (AMP), derived from the C-terminal fragment of hCAP18 (human cationic antimicrobial protein 18). This 37-amino acid α-helical peptide with a molecular weight of 4,493 Da is a key component of the innate immune system and has been extensively studied for its antimicrobial activity, immunomodulatory effects, and wound-healing properties.
LL-37 has direct antimicrobial activity in vitro against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It also modulates inflammatory responses through TLR signaling, FPRL1 receptor activation, and EGFR transactivation pathways.
